What counts as a deep voice?

A deep voice test, sometimes called a voice deepness test, comes down to one number: the pitch your voice settles around when you talk. These are the bands the result uses, worked out from adult norms (men average 115 Hz, women 199 Hz).

Why your recorded voice sounds higher than you expect

When you speak, you hear yourself partly through the bones of your skull, which carry low frequencies well. A recording only has the sound that travelled through the air, so most people think their recorded voice sounds higher and thinner than “their” voice. Other people hear the recorded version. The test measures that air-borne voice, which is why the number can feel higher than you expected.

How it works

  1. 1Choose who to compare your voice with: adult men, adult women, or no comparison.
  2. 2Press Start and allow the microphone. A quiet room works best; hold your phone about 30 cm (a forearm) away.
  3. 3Read the short passage aloud in your normal speaking voice and at your normal volume. Don't put on a deep voice: the point is how you usually sound.
  4. 4After about 8 seconds of speech you see your median speaking pitch in Hz, how it compares, the nearest musical note and your range while reading.

Questions

Is a voice deepness test the same thing?

Yes. Deep voice test, voice deepness test and voice depth test all mean the same measurement: the pitch your voice settles around when you talk, in hertz. Lower is deeper.

Can I make my voice deeper?

Partly. Practice can teach you to speak at the lower, more relaxed end of the range you already have and with a fuller sound. It can't change your anatomy, so the gains are modest: studies of voice training report drops of one to three semitones. Our guide explains what works and what doesn't.

Is my voice recorded?

No. Your browser measures the pitch of your voice many times a second and throws the sound away. Nothing is recorded, stored or uploaded, and the microphone switches off when the test ends. Only the numbers are kept, so you can share or track them.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Phone microphones work; hold the phone about 30 cm away and read at your normal volume. A headset microphone is a little more accurate. The test filters out room noise and checks each moment of sound for a clear pitch before counting it. If it can't hear you at all, check your microphone first.
