Voice depth test

Measure the depth of your voice the way voice clinics do: your median speaking pitch while reading, in Hz, against published adult norms. Free and private.

About 30 seconds · microphone

Measure your voice's depth against adult norms.

You'll read a short passage aloud in your normal voice. Your browser measures the pitch and keeps no recording.

How voice depth is measured

Two things make a voice sound deep, and they're easy to mix up. Pitch is how fast your vocal folds vibrate: fewer times a second sounds lower. Resonance is how the throat and mouth colour that sound: a relaxed, open throat gives a fuller, darker sound at the same pitch.

This voice depth test measures pitch, the part that can be measured reliably on a phone. It tracks your speaking fundamental frequency many times a second while you read, keeps only the moments with a clear voice, drops octave errors, and reports the median. It doesn't score resonance, so two voices with the same number can still sound different. The deep voice exercises work on both.

Why a median, and why reading?

A few words always come out higher or lower than the rest, especially at the start of a sentence. The median is the pitch you spend most of your time around, so those outliers don't move it. Reading a set passage keeps the task the same every time, which makes week-to-week comparisons fair. A held “ahh” is easier to measure but often sits away from how you actually talk. How it all works, with sources, is on the science page.

How it works

  1. 1Choose who to compare your voice with: adult men, adult women, or no comparison.
  2. 2Press Start and allow the microphone. A quiet room works best; hold your phone about 30 cm (a forearm) away.
  3. 3Read the short passage aloud in your normal speaking voice and at your normal volume. Don't put on a deep voice: the point is how you usually sound.
  4. 4After about 8 seconds of speech you see your median speaking pitch in Hz, how it compares, the nearest musical note and your range while reading.

Questions

How is voice depth measured?

Voice clinics measure speaking fundamental frequency: how many times a second your vocal folds vibrate while you talk, in hertz. Lower means deeper. This test does the same in your browser while you read, then takes the median, so a few low or high words don't skew it.

What is a deep voice in Hz?

When they speak, adult men average about 115 Hz and adult women about 199 Hz (Leung and colleagues, 2022). For a man, under about 100 Hz is deep: deeper than roughly three in four men. Bass singers often speak around 85 to 95 Hz.

Is my voice recorded?

No. Your browser measures the pitch of your voice many times a second and throws the sound away. Nothing is recorded, stored or uploaded, and the microphone switches off when the test ends. Only the numbers are kept, so you can share or track them.
