Can a phone measure voice Hz accurately?

Yes, for pitch. Phone microphones pick up low frequencies weakly, but pitch can be found from the overtones even when the fundamental is faint. We test the exact measurement the page runs against synthetic speech with a known pitch, including a cheap-phone microphone in a noisy room. It lands within 2 Hz from 80 to 210 Hz. Real rooms vary more, so measure somewhere quiet, about 30 cm from the microphone.

How it works

  1. 1Choose who to compare your voice with: adult men, adult women, or no comparison.
  2. 2Press Start and allow the microphone. A quiet room works best; hold your phone about 30 cm (a forearm) away.
  3. 3Read the short passage aloud in your normal speaking voice and at your normal volume. Don't put on a deep voice: the point is how you usually sound.
  4. 4After about 8 seconds of speech you see your median speaking pitch in Hz, how it compares, the nearest musical note and your range while reading.

Questions

What frequency is the human voice?

The pitch of a speaking voice, its fundamental frequency, is usually between about 85 and 255 Hz: adult men average about 115 Hz and adult women about 199 Hz. Your voice also carries overtones up to several thousand hertz, which shape how it sounds, but the fundamental is what we hear as high or low.

What does the musical note mean?

It's the piano note closest to your median speaking pitch. 110 Hz is the A two octaves below middle C (A2); 131 Hz is C3. It's a handy way to find your speaking pitch on an instrument.

Is my voice recorded?

No. Your browser measures the pitch of your voice many times a second and throws the sound away. Nothing is recorded, stored or uploaded, and the microphone switches off when the test ends. Only the numbers are kept, so you can share or track them.

Why is my result a little different each time?

Speaking pitch moves with the time of day (most voices are lowest in the morning), loudness, mood and how warmed up you are. A few hertz either way is normal. Take the test on a couple of different days for a fair picture.
